As the world continues its relentless download into the digital age, it’s more important than ever to make sure your child is protected from some of the more mature content on the Web.
It is impossible to know how much of the Internet is devoted to adult material, but it is estimated that pornography alone accounts for between 5% and 35% of all websites. And that’s before counting topics like gambling, extreme corruption, dating sites, and other related themes.
Fortunately, the number of child lock applications has grown at an impressive rate in recent years. Parents now have a wide range of software to choose from.
But what should you use? Continue reading to learn about some of the Windows 10 parental controls.
1. Windows user accounts
Microsoft confirmed its original parental control offer by releasing Windows 10. It is now possible to set a user account as a “subaccount.”
How to lock Windows user accounts
you can manage your account on all the services your account is connected to, including Windows, Xbox, and the Microsoft Store.
Before explaining how to create a child account, you need to be aware of two important caveats.
First, your Windows 10 user account must be linked to a Microsoft account – you can’t create subaccounts if your account is a local account.
Second, you need to create an account with your family. More on that soon.
To create a subaccount, go to Start> Settings> Accounts. Click in the panel on the left side of the window Family and other users.
Below Your family, click Add a family member. A new window will open. Make sure you select Add a child. If your child already has an email address, enter it in the space provided.
If they don’t, click The person I want to add doesn’t have an email address. You can either create a new email or register a new account against your existing email address.
Click through the next few screens and you will receive a confirmation message. The new account will appear under Your family.
Click to manage account Manage family settings online. You have options to block websites, limit their display time, add money to their account so they can buy content from the app store, and even get weekly reports on what sites your child has visited.
If you want something more powerful than the original Windows tool, you have many options to choose from.
Qustodio is arguably the best third-party parental control application for Windows 10. It has a free version and a premium version, although the free version is comprehensive enough for most users. The entry-level premium version costs $ 40 a year.
The free version offers website filters, search result filters, customizable deadlines for games and apps, live alerts if your child uses questionable content, and even a registry of what they’ve done on your computer.
The biggest drawback: it is only available on one device.
The premium version adds social media tracking, location tracking, call tracking and blocking, text message tracking and blocking, and an expanded dashboard. Depending on the plan you choose, you can manage up to 15 devices.
Using Qustodion is simple: all you have to do is create an account on the website and install the app on all your devices. You can then manage individual settings from the web portal.
The software is also available for Mac, Android, iOS and Kindle, which means your child is protected no matter what device they use.
You should also consider OpenDNS. The company offers four plans, two of which – Family Shield and Home – are available for free.
Family Shield is pre-installed to block adult content and provides a solution that will set it and forget it. The home package is customizable and thus more complex to install for beginners.
While the two free services can only block sites and nothing else, they still restrict access to any proxies, anonymity, sexuality or pornography.
The beauty of using a DNS-based application, of course, is that it works at the network level – just add the DNS address to the router’s control panel. If network-wide filtering is too extreme, it can still work on a per-device basis.

Like Qustodio, Kaspersky Safe Kids has both free and paid levels. To use the free version, you only need to create an account on the Kaspersky homepage. You can then download and activate the app on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices.
Features of the service include display restrictions, time limits for social networks and games, and activity tracking. The $ 15 premium version adds reporting tools, location tracking and Facebook activity tracking.
The Kaspersky Safe Kids fee is included free of charge if you already have a Kaspersky Total Security plan.
Norton Family is a premium child lock app for Windows, Android and iOS.
Some of the key features of the app include network monitoring, time management, search monitoring, video surveillance, weekly and monthly child activity reports, and instant locking, which allows a parent to lock the child’s device from their own application.
Norton Family also supports access requests. If a child thinks an app or site has been unfairly blocked, they can ask you to whitelist it.
Unfortunately, if you live in a household with a lot of different devices, the software may not be appropriate – there is no Mac version.
The plan costs $ 50 a year.
If you want a web-based solution, check out the Clean Router. It replaces the home router and adds control and parental control to all devices on the network.
And you don’t have to worry about locking yourself in adult content. You can use device-specific filters and even choose the time you want to apply the filters.
Disadvantage: as a router, the device does not work as well as some of the best-known brands on the market; it is not as fast as similar 802.11ac devices.
You also have to pay a monthly fee. That’s $ 10 for the basic plan and $ 15 for the reward system.

KidLogger works as both Windows 10 parental control software and keylogger. That means you can restrict children’s access to content while making sure they don’t use apps that you’ve given them permission to use irresponsibly.
If you use the app for a long time, it will create a comprehensive picture of how your child is using the computer, including their most used applications and most frequently used files.
It also has a great feature that secretly takes a screenshot of your computer at predetermined intervals before saving it to the cloud, allowing you to see what your child was doing inside each app.
Because the app is a keylogger, you can see exactly what your child wrote for messages to friends and on social media. It is, of course, a powerful tool that some parents may feel uncomfortable using. If that’s not for you, try one of the more traditional services we’ve discussed above.
In addition to Windows, the app is available for Mac, iOS and Android.
Spyrix is a powerful remote monitoring application that runs on one of the best Windows 10 operating systems.
The list of features is impressive, if a little intimidating. It offers a keyboard tray, real-time screen viewing, remote screenshots, microphone monitoring, webcam monitoring, search engine tracking, URL logging, clipboard monitoring, alerts, analytics and more.
For one computer, the software costs $ 60. If you just want to use a keylogger (to get an idea of what might be causing problems for your child), you can download it for free.
How to choose the right parental control software for Windows 10
Before you buy the premium app, first make sure you’re clear about what you want your parental control software to accomplish. If you have a small child, something as simple as blocking websites is enough. As children get older, the features you need from the app will change.
