8 ways to free up RAM on your Windows computer

Should I learn to free up RAM after seeing messages that my Windows computer is low on memory? Don’t be afraid – we’re here to help.

Let’s look at some practical steps to clear your RAM and make your computer run smoothly.

What is RAM?

Before we consider tips for clearing RAM, let’s briefly describe what RAM does if you’re not familiar with it.

RAM means RAM. It is a short-term storage medium that keeps programs and processes currently running on your computer.

The more RAM you have, the more programs you can run at once without negatively affecting performance. When your computer runs out of RAM, it uses a side file called the portion of the storage drive that acts as pretend RAM. This is much slower than the actual RAM, which is why you will notice slowdowns when Windows uses it.

Because RAM is unstable, you lose its contents when your computer shuts down. All retained data must be stored in a permanent storage location, such as a hard disk or solid-state drive.

How to free up memory on your computer: 8 methods

Let’s look at ways to reduce the amount of RAM you use. You shouldn’t need to do this most of the time, but they are helpful when you notice a problem.

1. Restart the computer

This is a tip you’re probably familiar with, but it’s popular for a reason.

Restarting the PC also completely clears the RAM and starts all running processes. While this clearly does not increase the maximum amount of memory available, it cleans up running processes in the background that can consume your memory.

You should turn on your computer regularly to keep it from getting stuck, especially if you use it all the time.

2. Check the RAM usage with Windows tools

Using the Windows Task Manager Network

You don’t have to guess what uses your RAM. Windows provides tools to show you. To get started, open Task Manager by searching for it on the Start menu or by using it Ctrl + Shift + Esc Shortcut.

click on More information extend, if necessary, to the full utility. Then processes tab, click Memory title to sort the most RAM usage the least. Keep in mind the apps shown here, as we’ll discuss them later.

For more information, go to Presentation tab. year Memory In the section, you will see a graph of RAM usage over time. click on Open Resource Control at the bottom and learn more about it Memory tab.

The floor plan shows how much RAM you have. Sort by someone Commitment (KB) in the top list to see which programs use the most RAM. If you suspect you have a deep problem based on what you see, look a complete guide to troubleshooting memory leaks.

3. Disable or disable the software

Now that you’ve seen which applications use the most RAM on your system, think about whether you’re actually using them. An easy way to free up RAM is to block programs you are using!

Applications you haven’t opened in months will just be wasting resources on your computer, so you should remove them. To do so, go to Settings> Applications and click Uninstall in all the applications you want to remove.

Uninstall Chrome on Windows 10

If you don’t want to uninstall the app because you use it sometimes, you can instead prevents it from starting at startup

. Many apps set themselves to run automatically every time you sign in. This is excessive if you use them infrequently.

4. Use lighter applications and manage programs

Chrome Task Manager

What if you really need to reduce your RAM usage, but applications that contain RAM are essential to your workflow? You can handle this in two ways.

First, try lighter app options when you can. If your computer is struggling with Photoshop open, try making smaller applications with a smaller application, such as Paint.NET or GIMP. Use Photoshop only when you are fully dedicated to working on your project.

Second, pay more attention to open programs. Close any software that you are not actively working with. Bookmark open browser tabs that you want to read later, and then close them to free up RAM. Keeping a tighter strap open frees up RAM.

Google Chrome belongs to a class of its own here because it is notorious for RAM. see how to manage chrome memory usage

5. Scan for malware

You may want to scan your computer for malware. Stealing resources rogue software, of course, absorbs the available RAM.

We recommend that you perform a scan Malwarebytes. I hope it doesn’t find anything, but at least you can rule it out.

6. Adjust the virtual memory

Earlier we mentioned a page file. If you see error messages your system has low virtual memory

Is your virtual memory too low? Here’s how to fix it!
Computer memory can slow down your computer over time. This determines the size of the virtual memory and improves performance.

, you can add this and hopefully keep the performance stable.

You can do that by searching control panel On the Start menu to open it. Change Category view in the upper right corner Small icons (if necessary) and select system. Click on the left Advanced system settings, which opens a new window.

Here Advanced tab, click settings button below Presentation. Switch to Advanced tab again and click Change button virtual Memory section.

You will now see the page file size of the main drive. In most cases, you can leave Manage automatically check box selected and let Windows take care of it. If virtual memory is low, you may need to deselect and set this option Original size and Maximum size higher values.

7. Try ReadyBoost

If your computer still has an older mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), you can try a lesser-known feature in Windows called ReadyBoost increases RAM

If you want to give your computer a quick and free speed boost, try ReadyBoost. The Windows feature adds extra memory to the system. All you need is a compatible flash drive.

. This allows you to connect a flash drive or SD card that Windows efficiently treats as extra RAM.

This feature sounds good, but its use is limited today. If your computer has an SSD, ReadyBoost does nothing. This is because an SSD is faster than a flash drive.

Also, because more RAM is now installed on computers by default, you won’t see as much benefit from ReadyBoost as you did from the anemic system many years ago. ReadyBoost’s “pretend RAM” doesn’t offer the same performance gains as adding more RAM.

8. Install more RAM

If your RAM level is always low or you want to run more than one program at a time, you really can’t work around it: you need to add more RAM to your device. While it’s not cheap, adding RAM will greatly improve performance if your computer hasn’t had much so far.

If you’re wondering how to get more RAM, know that you can only add more RAM by adding physical sticks to your machine. The online claims of “more RAM loading” are jokes; memory cannot be increased in this way.

Adding RAM to your desktop is a fairly simple upgrade. But due to the limited space of a laptop, on laptops it can be difficult or even impossible. You also need to make sure that you buy RAM that is compatible with your system.

Check your computer manufacturer’s guides to find out what kind of RAM works with your system and whether upgrading is easy. Online forums also help here. For more information, we have compared whether faster RAM or total RAM is more important

What about RAM cleaners?

You’ve probably seen RAM cleaning utilities that promise to help you increase your RAM in a variety of ways. While these sound good, we recommend avoiding them.

, one such application reasons. In summary, RAM amplifiers are a placebo at best because they “free up” RAM by taking it from programs that are likely to need it.

Memory management is a complex calculation method. Windows developers in their area have a much better understanding of how to do this than any casual developer who releases a RAM cleaner.

RAM is just one important upgrade

We’ve explored several ways to free up RAM in Windows 10. Ultimately, adding physical RAM to your machine is the best solution to RAM problems. However, through the steps above, you will be able to decide if this is necessary.
