If you’re trying to save money and cut the cable, HDTV antennas may have been pretty expensive. Because not all channels are available online, access to some TV broadcasts (as opposed to cable or satellite) is helpful.
But the costs are. You cut the cable to save money. While one-time expenses may be affordable, a few moments of browsing Amazon shows that only a high-end device is appropriate.
The alternative is then to build a DIY HD antenna using a few store-bought components.
How to create a DIY TV antenna for your Atticante
In this demo video, you can see a working digital TV antenna built from just a few parts.
The process is simple. To use wood as a base, a collection of household appliances is needed to receive TV signals from a nearby transmitter.
Wire hangers act as antenna clamps that are attached to the plate with screws and washers and connected by a wire. The signal received in the middle (enhanced by some disposable grills) is routed through the balun to the coaxial cable and the television.
This type of digital TV antenna is best installed in your attic room because it is not particularly weatherproof. However, it can be adapted for outdoor use by introducing more durable materials. At first, however, we recommend this tree-like version.
Step 0: Tools and hardware for creating a DIY HDTV antenna
First, you need to collect the tools. Make sure you have:
- The power drill.
- Electric screwdriver.
- Wire cutters.
- Ruler or tape measure.
- Hacksaw or hand-held mini-rotating tool (eg Dremel).
As you can see, these are all standard tools you should already have access to.
The HDTV antenna is built from the following components. Note that all dimensions in this project are in inches:
- 22-inch section of 2 × 3 or 1 × 3 wood panels.
- Woodwork pencil.
- 18 screws, no deeper than the wood of your choice (1 ″ or 2 ″).
- 18 washers to fit between the screws and the wire.
- Thick wire for antenna “V” (rear hangers can be purchased cheaply in bulk on eBay).
- Copper wire (I used six pieces of wire from an old PC power supply).
- Aluminum mesh grill trays, as typically found in disposable BBQ kits.
- 1x Balun—This is a small coaxial plug with adjustable screws for connecting the wires (picture below). You may be the one lying down on an old analog TV. If not, you can pick them up online or at the dollar store.
- The length of the coaxial cable that runs from the antenna to the television. Make sure you measure the required length before installing the antenna.
Step 1: Find your local transfer tower
By knowing where the nearest TV transmitter is, you can align your antenna correctly.
You have different options for this. The simplest is to check the current antenna and use the same alignment.
If you don’t have an antenna (you may have used satellite TV or cable so far), you can check your neighbor’s trend.

Step 2: Preparation of the wood base
Start by preparing a wooden backing board:
- Draw a 1-inch gap in the center.
- Starting 2 inches from the top, mark a line that crosses the gap at 5.25 inch intervals.
- You should have eight points where the lines intersect.
It should look something quite similar to this.
Step 3: Cut the coat hangers
Next, cut eight lengths of jacket hangers, each 14 inches long.
The length of each wire must be bent halfway to form a V-shape with the ends three inches apart. Measurements are necessary for the antennas to work properly, so don’t just fold them in half at random.
Cutting can be done with a chainsaw if needed, but a Dremel-style hand-held mini-tool is a faster option.
Step 4: Attach the V-wires to the stand
Next, drill eight guide holes to secure the V-wires with a narrow blade. Secure the holes drilled with V-wires with screws and washers.
It is a good idea to use screws with screws here, but make sure you use washers to contact the cord.
Step 5: Capture the waves
Turn the base over and screw each disposable grill tray to the back of the antenna, both screws. They act as a reflector that collects the signal to your antenna.
Next, connect the V-profiles with the wire. Cross these tops and bottoms and drive straight along the center.
Remove the insulation from the segment from the two center wires. This makes it easier to attach the Balun.
Balun is the interface to television. Think ahead and make sure it is properly in place to connect and reconnect the coaxial cable in a closed state. Soldering the balun makes the connection permanent, but if you’re not sure about this, look at us soldering start guide

Step 6: Receiving HDTV images with a DIY antenna
You’ve built an antenna – now it’s time to give it a try!
Connect the device to a suitable HDTV, open the TV menu and start searching for channels. As with any TV antenna, you need to experiment with multiple positions for best results, so be patient.
It is smart to get the meter from the right angle needed to receive images before you permanently install the antenna. This can take quite a bit of trial and error depending on your environment. You may find that attaching the device to an exterior wall is a better option than hiding it in a loft or attaching it to a ceiling.
I found that placing the antenna on a table and slowly aligning it with the current ceiling antenna produced good results. It’s a situation that works for you and your environment.
Step 7: Install the DIY HDTV antenna
The last step is to install a DIY antenna. How you do this depends on your location and local signal strength.
For example, if your home can receive a good, strong signal, you might place an antenna in your attic room. However, standard reception will probably require an antenna to be mounted on the hub.
