Laptops are always limited to Wi-Fi connections; desktops never have built-in mobile Internet. But what if you need your Linux computer on a network but you don’t have a wireless or Ethernet network?
The answer is division. You can use your smartphone to share a wireless Internet connection with your computer.
As long as your carrier does not restrict the use of the data, sharing an Internet connection (also known as netshare) with a Linux computer is a good option. Wi-Fi sharing is one option – here are instructions for using USB sharing on Linux with Android and iPhone.
What is a division?
Sharing is the name given to connecting a mobile device to a computer to share mobile Internet.
While some airlines may restrict this activity, today it is rare. Most smartphones have a data plan that allows sharing, so sharing is an attractive way to get online.
Strictly speaking, the idea of sharing refers to the use of a USB cable to share mobile Internet. This means that you will need to carry your phone’s USB data cable if you plan to use sharing.
Wireless sharing is also possible via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; This is also called a “wireless hotspot”. In most cases, wireless sharing is easier, but there are good reasons for USB sharing:
- For a reliable network connection
- Keep your phone charged
- Avoid wireless interference
- Prevent wireless interviewers from intercepting data
If you do not have a suitable USB cable, here is the following how to use your phone as a wireless access point

. Just connect your Linux computer to your phone’s hotspot network to get an online connection.
Use the correct USB cable for sharing
Before you continue, you need to make sure you are using a USB cable that is suitable for sharing. Not all cables work because of this, as some are designed purely for power. The best way to check the suitability of a USB cable for sharing is to connect it to a computer. Connect the phone and wait for either device to detect the other. If some form of data transfer or file browsing is available, it is suitable for sharing.
If you have problems with your cable, you should be able to purchase a suitable data-ready option online.
All of the following methods require that the mobile device be connected to the computer with a USB cable before activating sharing.
How to share Android phones on Linux
If you have an Android device, the sharing is straightforward, which is partly because both the phone and the computer are Linux-based.
To connect Android to Linux with a USB cable:
- Connect the USB cable to your phone and the Linux computer.
- Android detects the connection – when prompted to allow access, select Allow.
- year notifications Find USB message and tap it.
- Below Use a USB connection, choose USB tethering.
In most cases, the connection is established automatically. Check the device IP address to make sure the device is working
ip address. Find the option marked
Some distros may require a USB connection.
- Find the web platform applet on your Linux system
- Click to find a network option with a name like “auto usb0”.
- Select this to connect Linux to your phone using a USB cable.
Don’t have a data plan that allows sharing? Installing a custom Android ROM can help circumvent the restrictions.
Want to share a BlackBerry phone?

- Blackberry OS 7.0 (2011-2013)
For BlackBerry devices running Android, see the section above. Check out the BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS 7.0 systems below.
To connect your phones using USB using the BlackBerry 10 operating system, first connect your phone to your computer. Then:

- Install network credentials.
Choose any method, select usb0 to the network in the Linux panel if it does not connect automatically.
How to Share iPhones on Linux |
If you have an iPhone with a data plan that allows sharing, you can set up USB sharing.
However, unlike Android, this does not connect automatically. Instead, you need to
libimobiledevice, described as “a multi-platform software protocol library and tools for initially communicating with iOS devices”. Head www.libimobiledevice.org to confirm the current compatibility.
If you are using Ubuntu, libimobiledevice should already be installed. If not, open the terminal before connecting iPhone to Linux, and type:
sudo apt install libimobiledevice6
To connect to the Internet through iPhone:
- Open Settings> Hotspot.
- Enable Allow others to join.
Now all you have to do is choose a connection on Linux. Unlike Android, iPhones appear as a new Ethernet device instead of USB. So look
eth1– Usually the latter, such as
eth0 should be configured for your Ethernet port.
Connecting Linux Phones to Linux
Several Linux mobile operating systems are available. These include the Mobile version of Pure OS on Librem 5, PostmarketOS on PinePhone and UBPorts, an extension of Ubuntu Touch.
Perhaps surprisingly, not all of these have reliable alternatives to USB or wireless sharing. See the documentation for the Linux mobile project you are using for more information.
Connecting your phone to Linux: Success!
Smartphones can be used as wireless access points for laptops and computers, but USB sharing is still useful. For example, your computer may have a damaged network adapter or you may have devices that are sensitive to wireless interference.
Ultimately, sharing your phone’s mobile internet is a great way to get your Linux computer or any other device online. And if you’re worried about losing your phone’s charge, the USB cable makes sure it consumes power from your computer. It must be won!
