Anyone can join Google Stadium and upload games to their computer. But do you need the Google Stadia driver to play Google Stadia games? In a word, no.
Several popular game controllers work with Stadia, which means you can start streaming Google games right away.
Here’s how to use different drivers with Google Stadium …
How to use Google Stadium on your computer
You may not know this, but you don’t need a Chromecast or even a special Stadia driver to use the service. And because it’s a game streaming service, you don’t need a powerful computer either.
All you need is the Google Chrome browser. Just visit stadia.google.com, sign in with your Google Account and start playing. Google is offering a trial period to help you showcase your game collection. All you need is a driver.
For best results, however, make sure you run one Chrome browser window and tab for Stadia. This ensures that your browser does not use too much of your computer’s resources to stream games.
You can also play Google Stadium on mobile devices
In addition to your computer and Chrome browser, you can play Stadia games on the following devices:
- Pixels 2, 2XL, 3, 3XL, 3a, 3a XL, 4, 4XL
- Samsung S8, S8 +, S8 Active, Note 8
- Samsung S9, S9 +, Note 9
- Samsung S10, S10 +, Note 10, Note 10+
- Samsung S20, S20 +, S20 Ultra
- OnePlus 8, 8 Pro
- Asus ROG Phone, ROG Phone II
- Razer Phone, Razer Phone II
These are arguably the most popular Android phones currently available, so you can take standard console games anywhere. Of course, you need a high-quality Internet connection without data restrictions if you don’t use a Wi-Fi connection.
You must also have the Google Stadia app installed on your phone.

Connect the console controller to Stadia
As you’ve gathered, Google Stadium has two ways to play with a game controller: on your computer or on Android.
Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux computers are all suitable for connecting drivers to play games on Stadium. However, there is some difference in their compatibility. To ensure compatibility, generally use USB instead of Bluetooth.
The Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch Pro drivers are all connected to your computer via USB. Plus, Chrome automatically detects them all. As such, you can play Stadia games using one without interruption and effort.
Connect the console game controllers to Stadia on your computer
You can play Stadia games with a game controller connected to your computer. There are some differences between the console controllers and the Stadia controller (see below), but otherwise the variation is minimal.
So what do you need to know when connecting your favorite console controller to Stadia?
If you are having difficulty, it is wise to check out some online support groups. Although Google maintains Stadium Help Center, get a faster response from the community and developers Stadia subreddit.
Connect almost all game controllers to Android Stadium
A controller is recommended for playing games on Android. This is not just for Stadia; more and more Android games support USB and Bluetooth controllers.
Android is flexible enough to connect to almost any game controller. You have already seen above that the Switch Pro controller can be connected to your Android device. Guide connecting game controllers to Android

Using Third Party Drivers with Stadia
When using a non-Stadia controller with Stadia, there are some differences in the controls. While the general similarities are clear, the secondary buttons are different.
The Stadia menu can be opened by pressing the controls Home button (Shift + Tab keyboard). However, this does not work on Xbox Adaptive drivers for Android, Linux, or Chrome OS.
Additionally, Windows users cannot use the Home button on Xbox controllers with Stadia without launching the game bar. Shift + Tab the hotkey should be used instead.
Just use your computer keyboard and mouse
While your computer keyboard and mouse may not be perfectly suitable for all titles, they are a good alternative to Stadia.
In fact, if you only have one game controller and want multiplayer, using a keyboard and mouse is the ideal solution for another player.
While Stadia doesn’t have a large number of strategy games, there are plenty of first-person shooters on offer. PC gamers have long had an advantage over consoles in this regard, with the mouse / keyboard combination being preferred over controllers.
You have the perfect opportunity to find out if this is true.
Connect the Stadia drivers to your computer’s USB ports
To play Stadia games on a TV, you need a Stadia controller. This is a Wi-Fi compatible controller that syncs with your remote host games, but does it work without a TV?
Since you can access Stadia through your browser, the answer is yes. Just connect the Stadia controller to your computer with the supplied USB-C cable. However, do this before you start playing to make sure it installs correctly.
When you’re done, go to the Stadia website, log in and play.
The best playable games on Google Stadium
Stadia’s original marketing focused on installing the Chromecast Ultra / Wi-Fi controller, a powerful but expensive alternative to streaming games on TV. However, it turns out that you don’t need either of these items.
If you have the right controller, you can play Stadia games. And future updates will definitely add support for more drivers.
