Skype video not working? Camera testing and troubleshooting

Do you want to make a video call or join a video conference only to keep Skype from showing your face? While this may be helpful if you’re shy, it can confuse each other – it’s also not professional.

There will be no video stream if there is a problem between Skype and the webcam. If you’re trying to make Skype video calling work, here’s what you need to do.

Skype video calls don’t work? 8 tips

If your video chat software isn’t working, you may be missing out on important work conversations. So test your webcam and fix any problems before you sit down to meet.

The following Skype video troubleshooting tips are for Windows 10, but most work with MacOS and Linux.

  1. Set up Skype for video calls.
  2. Update the software to the latest version.
  3. Check your webcam for device driver updates.
  4. Check if the webcam is turned off.
  5. Use the correct version of DirectX.
  6. Check for other programs that use the webcam.
  7. Could antivirus block Skype’s video call?
  8. Check the webcam for damage.

Let’s take a closer look at these suggestions and find out why your webcam doesn’t work on Skype.

1. Set up Skype for video calls

Before you start negotiating, it’s smart to make sure Skype is set up correctly for video calling.

With Skype open, click the three-point icon to open the menu and select settings (or press Ctrl +).

click on Audio video section, and you can see which of your camera devices is selected.

Choose the right webcam for Skype

You can track most Skype problems on this screen. The problem is usually the wrong camera choice, although it could be just as easy in webcam settings.

To get started, choose the right camera. You’ll find a drop-down selector next to the Camera heading. Be sure to choose the right camera here. It usually appears as a USB device, whether or not it’s built into your computer.

If Skype is set to use the correct webcam, you may have a problem with the webcam itself. You must first try to launch all the software that came with the webcam. This can often be used to start and test a webcam.

If your webcam has a hardware switch, turn it on.

Also, spend time in the webcam software to check the settings for video chat for restrictions or configurations. For example, you may need to set Skype (or other applications) permission to use the camera.

2. Update Skype

Once Skype is configured correctly, it is a smart idea to update the software. Microsoft regularly releases updates to Skype, so hardware issues can be easily fixed this way.

Then click the three-button menu to check your Skype version Settings> Help and Feedback. In the right pane, you will see the Skype version and year. The year shown should be the current year. Windows users should use Skype or later.

Skype will automatically update in Windows, but you can force the update by uninstalling Skype and downloading the latest version.

To delete, press start and type skype. Expand the list in the displayed result and click Uninstall.

Remove Skype

year Programs and features screen, highlight skype and select Uninstall from the menu.

We recommend restarting Windows after the software has been removed – you are now ready to reinstall Skype.

3. Update the webcam drivers

If you’re trying to open a video chat in Skype, start by updating your webcam drivers. You must first know the current driver version.

Check this in Device Manager – right-click Start> Device Manager.

A yellow exclamation point on the webcam indicates that your problem is a resource conflict with another device. To check this, expand Cameras to see the device name.

Right-click, select Features> Drivers, and write down the date and version of the driver.

Check the web drivers to fix Skype

Click to update Update the driver. If a new version of the driver is available, it will be downloaded from Windows Update servers.

In some cases, this may not work. Check the manufacturer’s website for external webcams (connected via USB) for the latest driver updates. Install, download and follow the instructions if there is anything new.

4. Is your webcam turned off?

When you start a video chat with a friend, make sure the webcam is turned on. Otherwise, Skype video calls will be turned off.

You can fix this in Device Manager. Just recognize the camera, expand, right-click the device name, and select Turn on the device.

You may need to restart your computer for this change to take effect correctly.

5. Update DirectX to fix Skype video calls

Windows requires DirectX to ensure seamless multimedia performance. This mainly covers visual media, especially games and videos. If Skype video calling doesn’t work, it’s a good idea to upgrade DirectX as part of your troubleshooting process.

Skype video calls require DirectX 9.0 or later. Press WIN + R and type dxdiag In the Run dialog box to check the DirectX version again.

Windows on your computer.

6. Check if other programs are using your webcam

Other applications can use your webcam. If the light is on before you start Skype, some programs are already using your webcam. This can cause Skype problems in capturing the same flow.

To fix this, close other applications, especially all those that depend on instant messaging and the Internet, and then restart Skype.

7. Does antivirus software block Skype video calls?

Does antivirus block Skype?

Modern antivirus programs and firewalls can manage the connections of devices connected to computers. This feature helps improve your personal privacy, but sometimes it can be frustrating. If your Skype video call doesn’t work, it could be because security software is blocking your webcam.

To check this, open your antivirus software and check your privacy settings. Find a setting that connects directly to your computer’s camera and microphone.

Check your antivirus software documentation for the correct steps to get Skype to use your webcam.

8. Is your webcam broken?

If you’ve already gone this far and your Skype video call still doesn’t work, it’s possible that your webcam is faulty. This is a sign of replacing an obsolete cam with a new one with a working warranty.

You can check this by trying the webcam with another app. Windows 10 has a built-in camera app for webcams, so try to do this. Or launch another chat app and try out the video chat option there.
