What to know before changing the iTunes and App Store country

We may live in an interconnected world, but international laws and policies are not always able to keep up with our showering habits. You will find this first hand if you try to switch your iTunes or App Store account from one country to another.

While it’s possible to change your iTunes or App Store country – which we’ll show you below – there are significant drawbacks to doing so, such as losing use of all your previous purchases.

Here is everything you need to know about this process.

Problem changing country in iTunes or App Store

App Store apps not downloaded on this iPhone

Each country uses a different version of iTunes or the App Store. Sometimes these stores have a variety of apps, music, movies, and other media. But even if the two stores have exactly the same content, you can only use purchased media from the store you bought from.

This means you’ll lose access to all your existing iTunes and App Store purchases when you change your Apple ID to another country.

All products already on your device are still available, and apps you’ve already downloaded will receive the latest updates. But you have to change App Store and iTunes settings

back to the original country if you want to use purchases that you have not yet downloaded.

The biggest problem here is that you need a valid form of payment for the country from which you want to change iTunes and the App Store. You cannot use an Australian credit card, for example, in the U.S. App Store.

So if you moved from Australia to the U.S., you’ll need to get an American credit card to switch to the U.S. App Store. Then, if you have wanted to use your Australian shopping again, you will need to use your old Australian card to switch back. This may be impossible to do if you moved permanently to America and your Australian payment information is out of date.

One way to work around this issue is to create another Apple ID account instead of changing your current account.

Benefits of creating another Apple ID account

Click Country to create your Apple ID site

Instead of switching the country or territory of your current iTunes and App Store account, it’s sometimes helpful to create another Apple ID to use instead. With two separate accounts – one in Australia and one in the U.S., for example – you can switch between them at any time without having to update your payment information.

All you have to do is sign out of iTunes and the device’s App Store and then sign in again with another account. You will then have instant access to all iTunes and App Store content in that country, including your previous purchases.

It’s possible to create a new Apple ID account without attaching payment information, allowing you to download free media from iTunes or the App Store in any country. If you want to buy something from another country, you can either add a payment method from that country or purchase a foreign iTunes gift card to use with that account.

The problem with this method is that it splits your purchase into two separate accounts. Each of them must be associated with a separate email address. And if you lose access to one account, you will also lose all purchases you make with it.

How to keep iTunes and App Store purchases from different countries

Downloaded purchased movies from iTunes

If you’ve already downloaded them to your device, you can still access any apps, music, movies, TV shows, books, and other iTunes or App Store purchases, no matter what country or account you purchased them from.

This means that you’ll need to download any purchases you want to continue before switching to iTunes and the App Store or before creating a separate Apple ID account.

If possible, create a new copy of these purchases Make an iPhone backup

computer. When creating a backup, be sure to select an option Back up all data from your device to your computer.

If you lose access to your original Apple ID account, or if you are unable to move iTunes and the App Store to your original country, you can restore this backup to retrieve your original purchases.

How to change iTunes and App Store settings

If you permanently move to another country – which means you only expect to change the country of iTunes and the App Store once – you’ll need to change your account settings.

Otherwise, you should create another account to make it easier to switch between iTunes and App Store countries multiple times. This second method is especially useful if you don’t have a payment method for the new country you want to use.

We explain each option below.

Method 1: Change the country settings in iTunes and the App Store

You must complete a few steps before you can change your iTunes and App Store settings to another country:

You also need to make sure that you have a valid form of payment and billing address for your new country. You’ll need to add this form of payment to your Apple ID when you switch countries.

Although you can change the iTunes or App Store country from any device, you only need to do it once. When you change settings on one device, it affects the same account on all other Apple devices.

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. Open the settings application and go [Your Name] > iTunes and the App Store.
  2. Tap your Apple ID and select Show Apple ID pop-up menu.
  3. faucet Country / Region and select Change country or region, then select the new country you want to switch to.
  4. Once you have accepted the terms and conditions, enter the payment information and billing address for the new country and tap Made.

Mac:

  1. Open Apple Music and go Account> View Account in the menu bar.
  2. Below Apple ID Summary click an option Change country or region.
  3. Select the new country you want to switch to.
  4. Once you have accepted the terms and conditions, enter the payment information and billing address for the new country and tap Made.

Method 2: Create another Apple ID account in another country

Creating another Apple ID account is the best way to temporarily switch iTunes and the App Store to another country. You don’t need a foreign payment method, and it’s easy to switch back and forth from your old account to your new App Store account.

The easiest way to create a new Apple ID account is right on your device. When you do so, make sure you’ve selected the correct country for your new account. You’ll need to confirm this by adding a billing address in that country and verifying your account with an email address (and possibly a phone number).

You can use any phone number, even if it is from a different country. However, you must use a new email address that is not linked to an existing Apple ID account.

On iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  1. go to settings> [Your Name] > Log out.
  2. Choose which iCloud information will be stored on your device and tap sign out.
  3. Open the The app store and tap Account icon in the upper right corner, and then click Create a new Apple ID.
  4. Select a new country below the email address and password fields.
  5. Enter the email address and password you want to use for your new account. You can’t use an email address associated with another Apple ID account.
  6. faucet Next and fill in all requested Apple ID fields. If you do not have a payment method for this country, select Nothing. Even without a form of payment, you’ll need to find a billing address that you can use in this country.
  7. faucet Made when you are ready to create your new account.

Add to your account with an iTunes gift card

Once you’ve created a new Apple ID account or changed your existing account settings, you should be able to access content from iTunes or the App Store in the new country of your choice.

For your purchases, make sure your payment information and billing address match your new country. Alternatively, you can purchase an international gift card and use it to add credit to your account. Learn everything you know about iTunes Gift Cards
