Your Android phone can now help detect an earthquake

Google uses a massive Android installation base to help detect the earthquake. The company plans to build the world’s largest earthquake detection network. To achieve this, it plans to use the power of Android to help detect earthquakes as they occur.

The company calls its massive earthquake detection system the Android Earthquake Alerts System, and it could be a game exchange for anyone living in an area that often handles earthquakes.

What is Android Earthquake Alerts System?

In essence, Google’s new system turns your Android phone into a mini seismometer. It uses an accelerometer already built into most smartphones to understand that an earthquake could occur at the location of the phone.

If your phone detects an earthquake, it sends a signal to Google’s earthquake detection server. From there, the server combines data in the same area to determine if an earthquake is occurring.

Google announced the earthquake detection system in a post Keyword. In the message, the company said it means “mainly the speed of competing light with the speed of an earthquake. And lucky for us, the speed of light is much faster!” This statement is revised because the phone signal moves at approximately the speed of light.

In short, Google is looking for mass projects on earthquake detection, and it looks like it could work. Of course, you have to choose to participate in this program, so you don’t have to worry about Google tracking your devices unless you want to.

Get earthquake alerts with Google’s new system

To obtain California earthquake alerts, Google has partnered with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the California Governor’s Rescue Service (Cal OES). Alerts are delivered by ShakeAlert by sending earthquake warnings directly to Android devices in California.

Google is currently deploying its earthquake alert system in California only. It plans to introduce it in more states and countries throughout the year.

Each location uses Android’s phone-based earthquake detection and alarm system to give you a couple of extra seconds to prepare. Every natural disaster, like an earthquake, can make the difference between life and death.

This is not Google’s first scene in this area. Actually, Google has previously released a tool to help you steer away from natural disasters
